Five Questions to Ask Your Computer Tech. Print E-mail

Some of the most frustrating things seem to happen to people when they are trying to get work done on their computers.  I'm sure that you can think of at least five times when you had a deadline that you were trying to meet, when with no warning, you computer seemed to rebel.

As if planning a timed assault on your productivity in demand of better wages and vacation benefits - your system for some reason - halts.  Be it the famed "Blue Screen of Death" or a hanging application come prayers of mercy - that the project that you've been working on all day is still in tact.

What can you do to minimize the occurrence of such incidents and the damage done if an inevitable crash does occur?  Let's See.

  1. Is my Hardware Viable? Is it upgradeable?  Are upgrades necessary?

So many times I am asked to upgrade outdated hardware or in other cases, clients may be anxious to simply buy a cheap replacement computer to solve performance problems. Neither of these alone may be adequate solutions, depending on the situation. The usage habits of the staff may inadvertently be exposing the computer to viruses, Spyware, Trojan horses, Adware and/or general “Crapware” that will muck up the works of any new replacement computer as well. The point here is to get you informed so that you will spend your money wisely.

  2. Is Windows stable? Is it regularly maintained? Has extraneous, nonessential boot-up software been eliminated?

All of these issues will weigh heavily on the computer efficiency and thus staff efficiency by increasing wait times for various computer tasks. Straighten these and maximize your staff’s potential within the constraints of your current system with the lease amount of expense.
  3. Am I protected from Spyware and Viruses?

Specifically, are you using Antivirus and Anti-Spyware that is both current and providing adequate protection?  Does your solution offer Malicious Website Blocking?  As mentioned in the hardware viability section, this is an issue that can cost you $$ in productivity and time lost - in addition to possibly compromising your data integrity and overall system security. Do not wait to learn a painful lesson here, be proactive –GET GOOD PROTECTION.

  4. How is my backup?

    • Do you have a backup that runs regularly.
    • How many days of backup do you retain?
    • Is this sufficient for complience in your industry?
    • How long will it take to recover your data when you need it?
    • What about a major system crash... how will this affect your business (a question for you) in terms of money/time lost?
      • This cost could potentially be in the thousands of dollars -depending on your business - and is an important consideration to the type and amount of backup protection you should have.
  5. Is my Workstation and Network security good enought for my office?

Do you have an adequate, up-to-date firewall… is it personal or hardware firewall?  You can test the level of your firewall protection by clicking this link.  This is actually something that should be assessed for each office network device, because, if one device or network component is unsecured, then the whole network may be vulnerable.

Image CCS offers reasonably priced solutions that will allow you to get full protection and system reliability in one felt swoop OR purchase service/solutions to alleviate one or more of the items as necessary.
